Earth-System Models of Intermediate Complexity Introductory Remarks

چکیده
Background and Motivation Investigating the dynamic behavior of the Earth system remains a “grand challenge” for the scientific community. It is motivated by our limited knowledge about the consequences of large-scale perturbations of the Earth system by human activities, such as fossil-fuel combustion or the fragmentation of terrestrial vegetation cover. Will the system behave resilient with respect to such disturbances, or could it be driven towards qualitatively new modes of planetary operation?

Biogeophysical effects of historical land cover changes simulated by six Earth system models of intermediate complexity
Six Earth system models of intermediate complexity that are able to simulate interaction between atmosphere, ocean, and land surface, were forced with a scenario of land cover changes during the lastmillennium. In response to historical deforestation of about 18 million sq km, themodels simulate a decrease in globalmean annual temperature in the range of 0.13–0.25 C. The rate of this cooling ac...
متن کاملGlobal warming: the scientific context of the policy debate
The science of global warming is at the same time relatively simple and very complex. The simplicity exists in the elemental science that is taught in introductory earth science and meteorology courses at universities around the globe. The complexity lies in the integration of the many and diverse processes involved in climate change, some of which are poorly understood or even remain unknown, ...
متن کاملVariability in North Pacific intermediate and deep water ventilation during Heinrich events in two coupled climate models
The responses of North Pacific intermediate and deep water ventilation and ocean biogeochemical properties to northern North Atlantic glacial freshwater perturbations are evaluated with a coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation model MIROC and an earth system model of intermediate complexity LOVECLIM. When the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is weakened as a result of th...
متن کاملEffects of Task Complexity, Task Conditions, and Task Difficulty on the Grammatical Accuracy of EFL Learners in Written Discourse
Different methods of language teaching have tried to help EFL learners to develop good language skills based on their various perspectives. Research findings have underscored the effect of using task types in promoting language skills in terms of accuracy in written discourse. Therefore, this study set out to investigate whether there is an evidence of correct use of simple past tense (Accuracy...
متن کاملThe earth system model of intermediate complexity CLIMBER-3a. Part I: description and performance for present-day conditions
We herein present the CLIMBER-3a Earth System Model of Intermediate Complexity (EMIC), which has evolved from the CLIMBER-2 EMIC. The main difference with respect to CLIMBER-2 is its oceanic component, which has been replaced by a state-ofthe-art ocean model, which includes an ocean general circulation model (GCM), a biogeochemistry module, and a state-of-the-art sea-ice model. Thus, CLIMBER3a ...
